In this 30 min talk, Ben Horowitz outlines
- What culture is not (It's not the perks, or company values)
- What culture is (It's the collective behavior of an organization)
He then uses the example of the Haitian revolution led by Toussaint L’Ouverture in 1791 to lay out how you can change culture of a company:
- Keep what works (Steve Jobs sticking to Apple's strengths when he returned to Apple)
- Create shocking rules ("Move fast and break things" at Facebook)
- Incorporate other cultures (Google bringing in Diane Greene for its Google Apps for Business division)
- Make decisions that demonstrate priorities (Netflix taking a strong stance to make streaming a priority when all their revenue came from the DVD business)
