Hello, I've recently started a sabbatical and my first endeavor is to understand the underpinnings of AI, starting with machine learning. I have a BS and MCS from the University of Illinois. I have been working in software and consulting for almost 50 years. My most recent "hands-on" stint programming was from 2006 - 2010. I obtained my masters in 2011. I was around when the early stages of AI were happening and I have lived through a few "hype cycles". As stated in Chapter 1 of Deep Learning, this time it feels more real and a key reason is that the processing power and memory capacity is up to the task. Much new research of course, and some older ideas that are now practical to pursue. With the proper detailed background, I hope to experiment with deep learning using publically available training data, then look for applications of interest. As I gain knowledge and experience, I will contribute more to the community.
