I agree that his toys make him at par with other superheroes. In fact, I started liking him because of the uber cool gadgets! But imo what really sets him apart is his ability to distinguish the right from the wrong and unswervingly follow the right path. These values, combined with his exceptional tactical and detective skills make him the ultimate hero. Oh, and also, since he's purely human, he has the most bankable superhero quality: that of being relatable! :D
